Negativity

One thing that is bothering me for a while now, is that it’s been a good amount of time since I wrote a blogentry about some good feature introduced somewhere, a new package set added to the tree, in general something good to have been done, that is not a bugfix of something that was bothering people before. It makes me feel sad, because I know that I don’t want this blog to be a repository of fixed bugs, rants and problems. I would like it to carry more good news.

Unfortunately, I cannot really give you good news today: although KDE 3.5.6 is going to fix quite a bit of problems, and now KDE applications will finally show up in GNOME’s menus, and you’ll also get one less package to download (aRTs won’t be bumped to 3.5.6 as it’s not changed since its release), there’s a bad news to that too: the release scheduled for today the 23rd has been delayed as we’re trying to track down a nasty bug.

To account for at least some partial good news, I’d also like to say that I’ve started looking up in the tree which packages are not using the mirror:// URI when getting stuff out of commonly mirrored sources like GNU or Debian, so that if your Gentoo mirror of choice doesn’t carry the given file, at least you can choose a local mirror, too — this is particularly useful when doing version bumps, but can also cover for some of our users, I’ve had experienced problems related to a Gentoo mirror continuously going up and down.

  1. hmm do you mean the delay for gentoo, or for kde in general?archlinux just pushed out kde 3.5.6 :/ and there is no notice on kde.org

  2. It is delayed officially for everyone; Archlinux already pushed it out, and tpowa didn’t have time to push it back.

  3. since we’re talking about archlinux – they released faad 2.5 recently (i noticed today). did they solve the licensing issue, or they don’t know/care about it?

  4. Uh, there’s no way they solved the licensing issue (ahead refuses to change the license, and it *is* GPL incompatible), I’ll see to talk with tpowa when I find him online..

  5. Ah, fortunately I don’t use kopete (nor xinerama) – but incidentally kwin has just crashed on me (Arch’s 3.5.6) and it hasn’t done that since few releases.

  6. The problem is that even on non-xinerama setup, the things appears on the wrong (invisible) screen.

  7. Is there a way to disable that KDE applications show up in Gnome’s menu? I don’t need them in there and they really clutter my menu. For example: Why do I need to control the KDE Window decorations if I don’t run kwin? I only use kwrite on my gnome desktop and have multiple KDE things in my gnome menu I’ll never use 🙁
